Yungang Grottoes: A Millennium-Old Treasure of Buddhist Art
Located at the southern foot of Wuzhou Mountain in Datong City, the Yungang Grottoes were first carved during the Northern Wei Dynasty (460 AD) and currently house 45 major caves with over 51,000 statues, making them one of China’s Four Great Grottoes. The 13.7-meter-tall露天大佛 (Outdoor Giant Buddha) in Cave 20 stands as the grottoes’ masterpiece, showcasing a harmonious blend of Gandharan art and Central Plains culture. For the best experience, visitors are advised to begin their exploration from Cave 1 in the east and move westward, focusing on the Thousand Buddha Wall in Cave 5 and the Buddhist narrative reliefs in Cave 6. The site is open daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with an admission fee of 120 yuan. Tickets can be reserved via the official WeChat account. |
