山西是中国戏曲的摇篮。元曲四大家之中三人都是山西人：《窦娥冤》作者关汉卿、《倩女离魂》的作者郑光祖、《墙头马上》的作者白朴。

Shanxi is the cradle of Chinese opera. Three of the four masters of Yuan Qu are from Shanxi Province: Guan Hanqing, the author of Dou'e Yuan, Zheng Guangzu, the author of A Beautiful Girl, and Bai Pu, the author of the Wall Horse.
