在走西口历程中变成大商人的山西汉子们回来家乡后，为自己修造的房子大都是豪宅大院，被作为晋商财富的象征。这些院落的第一代主人，在走西口之前，几乎全是一些在家乡走投无路的贫苦农民。然而，像这样的成功者毕竟是少数中的少数，大多数走西口者命运很凄惨。　

  到了清末民国时期，随着晋商衰落和内蒙贸易的停顿，以及政府对此地失去控制，走西口以一种无序的状态进行。而西口之外的地区政局动荡不安、灾患频仍不断、基层控制能力薄弱，走出西口的移民仍然和口内一样生存无着，一部分走上了匪盗之路。走西口的规模也渐渐变小，走西口从此走向衰落。
